Did you know that starting a regular home yoga practices can be a relatively simple thing to do and the benefits can be transformative to your life and health? Intrigued… well read on.

When people think of yoga they often think of a studio or gym yoga class with students wearing fancy lycra yoga attire! This is where many people in our modern day culture are first introduced to yoga and in some cases the overwhelm and dread of yoga can hit in.

Yoga is an ancient tradition practiced by yogis and yogini’s for centuries, well before any yoga studios opened, and it was very much an individual self-practice, that you can easily do at home just like I and many other people do.

My personal experience is that doing just 10-minutes of yoga each day at home, is more effective than a 1-hour led studio yoga class and the befits add up.

A little + often = A Lot

Access to yoga teachers like myself online is making it much easier to practice yoga from home.

Setting up home yoga practice might take a little bit of preparation, and discipline, but once you are in a rhythm it can become as natural as brushing your teeth.

Here are just some of the benefits you can reap by having a regular home yoga practice.

Less stress

Each day connecting to our yoga practice can reduce the cumulative build-up of stress in our life. It can be as simple as checking in to our breath and our body by taking some deep breaths or doing a few simple yoga stretches throughout our day.

As a yoga teacher I am always struck by how stressed people can be ahead of coming to a class, and afterwards leave in a blissed and relaxed state. Imagine maintaining this connection to bliss and relaxation throughout your day?

The freedom to practice when, and what, you need

It may take a little time, but once we have repertoire of yoga practices, we can then choose on any given day what we need at that time. This can be particularly important for a woman with our cyclical nature of menstruation or life cycle or our innate connection to the lunar cycle.

Interestingly, the more I have cultivated my own home yoga practice, I find it difficult to be in a led class as my needs can often be quite different to what the teacher is teaching.

In addition, having a home yoga practice means we do not have to travel to a studio, and we have the freedom to fit our practice into our schedule. It can take some practice to prioritise and schedule our yoga practice ahead of other activities.

Believe me you won’t regret it once you start to do this and those around you will support you as you will be a better person to be with.

Time for you

A common reason that people say they can’t do yoga at home is that they don’t have time. I find that having a regular yoga practice actually creates time, or more to the point it changes our perception of time.

When we are calmer and grounded in our bodies, we create a sense of spaciousness. We can think more clearly, and we can be more focused on what is most important and let go of what is not. We are less likely to waste time.

These are just some of the benefits of a home yoga practice. Please comment below, I’d love to hear of the benefits you find from your home yoga practice.
